Grading helps ensure that teams are placed in an appropriate division to support fair and competitive games across the season.

Each season begins with a four-week grading period, during which the Southern Basketball Association (SBA) observes games and analyses scores to determine whether teams are correctly placed. Grades typically range from A Grade (highest) to D Grade, and most grades (except A Grade) are broken down into sub-levels (e.g., B1, B2, B3, B4) to help balance team matchups.

At the end of the grading period, SBA finalises all grades — no changes will be made after this point, so it’s important to choose your initial grade carefully.

Choosing the Right Grade

Each team’s Team Manager is responsible for selecting the team’s initial grade during registration. We strongly encourage all coaches and team managers to discuss this together and make an honest assessment of the team’s skill level.

Choosing the right grade from the outset ensures a better experience for all teams in the competition and protects the integrity of the season.

A Guide for Returning Teams

As a general rule of thumb: If your team finished in the top 2 on the ladder last season - consider moving up a grade.

If your team finished in the middle of the ladder - you’re probably in the right grade, so stay there.

If your team finished in the bottom 2 - consider moving down a grade.

Representative Players

If your team includes representative basketball players (e.g., Sabres players), you must enter the team in A or B Grade. This is a requirement under SBA’s grading policies and helps ensure a fair and balanced competition.
